The site for this project is a narrow and deep (65’ x 350’) hillside lot. The configuration of the plan evolved from the three major site constraints: the canyon crossing in the front of the property, an oak tree located at the side property line, and a steep slope.
Design: The main objective for the architects in the design was to create an open space floor plan, and bring to the beauty of the nature inside. The natural canyon runs North/South under the front of the house. Large glass openings are looking out into these directions focusing on the well-grown natural landscape of the canyon. The L-shape of the house was dictated by the oak tree, which hangs over the back yard providing shade and privacy. Because of the steep slope the yard as well as the house were developed in few levels, following the grade.
The construction of the house is a simple wood structure clad in stucco, natural stone, and wood siding, with plenty of glass to bring the nature in.
The floor plan is open giving the feeling of spaciousness, and easy visual communication between the different rooms.
The pastel colors of the walls and the stone create the feeling of warmth and coziness in the modern, clean design of the interiors. Maple wood furniture designed by architects, is combined with glass and stone throughout the entire house including the fireplace, dining room table, bar, and bookshelves, as well as all of the bathrooms and bedrooms. The conformity and harmony of the house is achieved by repeating the same materials throughout all of the interior as well as the exterior spaces. The stone floors combined with concrete triangles and stripes create dynamic patterns extending to the backyard integrating, once again, the inside with the outside spaces.
