Marina del Rey

A boat owner’s paradise, Marina del Rey is full of marinas and has slips for thousands of sail and motor vessels. Formerly marshy wetlands, Marina del Rey is now one of the largest manmade craft harbors in the world. Around this small town, the harbor is never far from sight and the water is the main attraction.

Real Estate: Capitalizing on the beautiful views over the harbor, Marina del Rey offers many condominiums and apartments for rent and for sale in many high-rise buildings. Single family homes for sale also often offer sea views and many balconies and decks to take in the ocean breezes.

Community Life: Life in Marina del Rey generally focuses on waterside activities. Free concerts are held on weekends and local restaurants offer waterside dining. Enjoying sunsets by the beach is a popular activity. For those without their own boats who still want to hit the water, several local charter services offer both private and public harbor cruises. Holidays are opportunities for fireworks from barges in the harbor and boat parades. Kayaks and stand-up paddle boards can be rented and make for a fun day of recreation in the sun. The Marina del Rey Farmers’ Market is held every Thursday from 9am to 2pm.

Education: Marina del Rey is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District. Local schools include Westside Leadership Magnet School and Goether International Charter School. Marina del Rey Middle School includes a performing arts magnet program.

Transportation: Marina del Rey is served by State Route 90 which connects to the 405 Freeway. In summer months the WaterBus serves eight stops around the harbor. Sidewalks and bike paths span the edges of the harbor.

Local Attractions: Fisherman’s Village is a draw for locals and tourists alike with a waterfront mall and a lighthouse structure (fans of the show “Arrested Development” might recognize this as the site of the Bluth Banana Stand). Plans for an overhaul should only make this more of a local treasure. Burton Chace Park extends into the main channel and has picnic tables, barbecues, guest docks, and is the site for many events throughout the year.
