Torrance

With the motto of “A Balanced City,” Torrance is the eighth largest city in Los Angeles County and is known for its business focus, close-knit communities and vibrant commercial areas. As the South Bay continues to attract new residents, Torrance continues to be a popular destination.

Real Estate:  Torrance was founded by real estate developer Jared S. Torrance who saw the potential n creating a planned residential and industrial community. In 1921 petroleum was discovered in the area and by the early 1950s oil production was a major industry. Oil production ended but major industry followed.

As the largest of the South Bay cities, Torrance has a wide range in real estate, from the oceanfront homes of the Hollywood Riviera area to the townhomes and condos by the harbor. Old Torrance offers some historic homes and beach bungalows but most of the housing stock in Torrance was built after the postwar boom in population.

Community Life: The city has over 30 parks including Miramar Park overlooking the beach. Wilson Park, which is 44 acres aind includes a roller-hockey rink and skate park also hosts the Torrance Farmers Market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Del Amo Fashion Center is one of the largest malls in the United States and continues to attract shoppers from around the globe.  The Torrance Cultural Arts Center includes a theater, Japanese garden, and art studios.

Education: Torrance is served by the Torrance Unified School District and has five high schools including a continuation school. There are eight middle schools and 17 elementary schools. Private schools in the area include Pacific Lutheran High School, South Bay Junior Academy, and St. Catherine Laboure Catholic School.

Transportation: Torrance is easily reached by the 405 Freeway and Highway 1.  Torrance Transit provides bus service in Torrance and Lomita and connects with other public transportation providers including LADOT. The city is located 10 miles from Los Angeles International Airport.

Local Attractions: Alpine Village, a German restaurant and marketplace is home to one of the largest Octoberfest celebrations in Southern California. The Madrona Marsh Preserve is one of the last vernal wetlands in Southern California.
