The area that would later become Monrovia was initially lived on by the Tongva tribe and was part of the Mission San Gabriel lands before plots of land were sold to the founders of the Monrovia land and Water Company. The company’s president was William Monroe and the city is named in his honor. Monrovia’s main street, Myrtle Avenue is named for his daughter.
