Incorporated in 1913, San Marino was designed by its founders as a residential area with large properties surrounded by gardens and wide streets. This careful planning resulted in a community known for its beauty over 100 years later.
Real Estate: The city is known for its fantastic quality of life and the stately elegance of the tree-lined streets with many single-family homes for sale. San Marino is full of beautiful estates including the home of astronomer Edwin Hubble, the Michael White Adobe House which houses the San Marino Historical Society archives, and an elegant home owned by the University of Southern California which is used as the residence of the President of the University. There are no apartments or townhouses in the area.
Community Life: San Marino was designed to be primarily residential and residents are protective of the area’s beautiful wide streets and parkways. In the middle of San Marino lies Lacy Park, a 30-acre area that includes a picnic area that hosts concerts and community events. Huntington Drive is the main thoroughfare through the town and is lined with shops and restaurants.
Education: There are four public schools in San Marino Unified School District: Valentine Elementary School, Carver Elementary School, Huntington Middle School, and San Marino High School. Local private schools include St. Felcitas and St. Perpetua Elementary, Learner High School, and Southwestern Academy.
Transportation: San Marino is easily accessed by the 210 Freeway. The area is served by many public bus routes through Metro and by the Gold Line at Allen Avenue Station.
Local Attractions: One of the most historic sites is the Old Mill, which served as a grist mill for Mission San Gabriel and is the oldest commercial building in Southern California. The Huntington Library is one of the world’s great cultural, research, and educational centers in the area and includes 120 acres of world-famous botanical gardens.
